Rear speaker replacement
I want to put some 8 inch subs in the place of the factory rear speakers to finish my speaker job. I will be running the subs off an amp but I am wondering if the factory mounts will support the weight of the subs. Has anyone done this before and has it worked well or not. Thanks for the help.
I think the ones in the rear deck are 6 1/2" so you will need to cut some metal or use smaller speakers. I would be interested in what it took to remove the covering since I believe you have to remove the side plastic trim behind the back doors. One of my speakers is blown so it's time to replace all of them.
I put a pair of 8" Kicker free air subs in my 99T5 many years ago.
It requires some cutting, etc, but they will work and with even a small amp, (I had only a 100w amp) it sounded GREAT, (along with the rest of a new system, HU and door speakers.
I'm older and did not need to vibrate the ground underneath the car so 100 was fine.
A 200-300 amp would be a killer

I have cut the bottom of the rear speaker baskets and the new 8s fit perfectly. I am not using free air subs but I am putting a box under the speakers mounted to the top of the trunk. I am using a 750W amp and a pair of 300W subs so it should provide the volume I want.
Just a note to anyone who is using the original baskets for 8 inch subs, make sure to put some foam tape on the bottom of the baskets to stop them from touching the metal. It will create a nice tight fit and eliminate any vibrations.
