Default S70 gasoline to diesel rebuild: can it be done?

I have a seriously troubled S70 1999 (previous posts). Recently I put it off road as I do not want to do engine rebuild only to sell the whole car for the same price as the engine job will set me back. My car has zero or minus zero value as it is. I am likely to leave the States in a year or two and I am considering taking the car with me to Europe (if I am nice to it). Now if I need to swap the engine anyway, why not to make a jump and put in a (used) diesel built to European specs/emission norms?? Change the systems accordingly as they will be required anyway? Volvo S70 in Europe had both gasoline and diesel. What do I need to consider??

Does the idea make sense? Is it doable?
Does it make sense economically?
The other option is to junk the car right away. Any opinions? Has anybody been there, done this?

Thank you for your opinions and suggestion
All of them are appreciated...even if you tell me I went nuts.
