Default S70 T5 ECU best choice for boosting a GLT?

Hi folks,
I've got a 98 S70 GLT, and was considering adding a few extra hp under the hood. To this effect I have been reading about performance upgrades to the ECU, resistors, exaust mods, chips etc...but what about the idea of simply installing an ECU from an S70 T5? Wouldn't that alone improve the performance of the GLT? What should I expect from this alternative in terms of pros and cons? Thanks

surely that's not a very good idea? the is your GTL a turbo? because otherwise you are telling a non turbo enginethere's a turbo there? and all things like fuel injections parameters would be different? it might be ok if your GTL is a turbo one, but even so, yours would be a 2.4 and the T5 is a 2.3, things are still different

Do not add an ECU from a T5 to your GLT. Youc an try it if you like, but I wouldn't. Just get an ECU upgrade you will be much happier.

IPD lists the stock T5 @ 10psi, the GLT @ 8psi.

Sounds like a fun experiment. Wonder what would happen.

well the stock psi is no more than 5psi on my glt. But what are some other differnces between the two engines?

GLT's run anywhere from 5-7 PSI stock. And can hold a max of 15 PSI before the effeciency range is exceeded. It varies from car to car. Especially if you haven't maintained the car well.

so the t-5's 10 psi would be ok. Wouldnt this also unlock the trip feature?

Like I said before you can run a max of 15 PSI on the stock GLT before the tiny 13g's effeciency range has been exceeded.

Now I wouldn't run a T5 ECU because for starters I personally don't know if it would work. And secondly if it did work what could some of the possibilities be that something would go wrong.

I would just get an ECU upgrade from the various vendors.

To answer the title of the thread...

NO a T5 ECU isn't the best choice for raising the boost of a GLT. The best choice would be to get an ECU upgrade from IPD USA, RICA, Upsolute, SpeedTuning USA, Inmotion

They could be swapped as long as they are both 1998 cars.
I really wouldn't reccomend doing it though.

A rather prudent and reasonable approach indeed, the suggestion posed by both tech and S70driver. Evidently there are a host of issues that may arise with this experiment, and I'm not here to dispute such probabilities; however, looking at the specs offered by IPD for instance,

Stock/ipd Torque Stock/ipd Boost PSI
S70 GLT 1998 LPT 190/230 212/265

S70 T5 1998 AUTO 236/285 243/290

It would appear that the stressors imposed on an S70 turbo GLT system by adopting an S70 T5 ECU don't exceed the stressors generated by an IPD upgrade of the stock GLT ECU, right?

Evidently there are a host of other factors to consider in this equation, most of which are admitedly far beyond my rudimentary grasp, but also including of course the imperative need for a stage 0 tuneup, including a transition into silicone vacuum and cooling lines, using synthetic oils, etc...

So I wonder, there must be someone in this forum or other Volvo related forums who's experimented with this variant, anyone know of such pioneers? I myself may consider this possibility some time in the future, but I'ld love to know what came of this experiment from someone who's already done it and lived to brag about it, if so.

Yes people over on Volvospeed have. Not sure if they did this with a 70 series but I think they did it with the 850 series.

However you would be much happier with a regular ECU upgrade. Trust me.

Im going to agree with s70 on this one. After talking with the guys at IPD, they made a very clear point. The 10psi program in the T-5 is asking for a larger tubro then the GLT has. Which, if you take somthing bigger and put it through somthing smaller, theri will be more pressure. So the 10psi could very well be over the 15psi limit of our turbos. That fact alone should make you not want the T-5 ecu. As replacing a turbo is much more than the chip upgrades s70 listed earlier.

Im not saying taht you cant put a T-5 in a GLT, you can under normal driving, but if your going to put a load on the turbo........ well, that might not be very pretty. Thus your actually slowing your car down since you wont want it to ever hit a high load.

Prudent advice indeed. Can't argue with the fact that an ECU upgrade appears to be the most effective and safest alternative of the two options in question. Moreover, the price of an ECU is not all that cheap either, unless one opts for a used unit.
And yet curiosity still lingers rather heavy around here.[:-]

Well if your that into trying it, then I would say go for it. But if what you really want is a higher boost psi, get an MBC. I will be putting one in soon with the help of Tech.
