Exclamation Are S70 T5 & GLT Engines interchangeable???

Just wondering...

I have a 1998 S70 GLT that lost a thrust bearing. While replacing the rear main seal, I found the crankshaft had been moving side to side. Bummer. I had thought about replacing the main bearings, but I do not know if the crank or journals have any abnormal wear because of the bearing failure. So...I have been looking for complete engines. A used GLT engine aparently is in high demand...EXPENSIVE!!! In the process of looking, I found a T5 engine w/ high mileage, but at a very reasonable price.

My question is: Can you swap the GLT engine w/ a T5 engine? If so, will I have to replace the ECM too? Why / why not? Will the wiring harness in the GLT be an issue w/ the T5 engine?

Thanks for any information!!

I would say NO. They have different displacements. If you do, you will likely have to swap everything over.

I know they have different displacements, but I also know that it will bolt up directly to the existing transmission & mounts. The automatic transmission is the same in both. The engine mounts are the same on both.

I'm wondering if I attempt this if I will have to replace the ECM & maybe the mass air flow sensor as well?? Wire harness?? I think the wiring is the same on both cars, so why can/can't this be done?

Have any of you tried this & been successful? Or not?

No I have not tried it, just in my reading around the site over the past few years, haven't heard of anyone having success doing it. If you try it change the ECM and let us know how it goes. The MAF may even be the same.

Thanks.

I'm probably going to go ahead w/ it. This engine is WAY to cheap to pass up. I'll keep you posted...

Default Glt swap

Hi. Was wonderin if you did the swap? I have a 95 glt that I wan throw a t5 (at least) in. Did you have to change the wire harness? Ecu? I have manual trans so CPU shouldn't be an issue. Any other changes?

No, I did not do the swap. I figured with the time & expense in doing so and not being sure if it will work or not was not worth it. I still have the car. It is now for sale if anybody is interested.

1998 S70 GLT w/ auto trans, bad engine (thrust bearing failure). Cylinder head is good (rebuild w/ less that 10K on it). Depending on the price I get for the car depends if the head will go w/ it or not.

Yes, wire harness, turbo, most likely exhaust parts, ECU, etc.

wboy: good thing you didn't try it; the T5 is lower compression engine than the GLT, so unless you swapped all the T5 engine accessories (see above) too, you would be driving around with a HD but de-tuned engine.
