Default S70 turbo surprises me-its fast

first I am in my mid 50`s and had to retire my 94 firebird formula (350 LT1) I bought during my midlife crisis. My car dealer found a real clean 2000 S70 GLT, to replace it. I was unsure if I wanted to buy a family 4 dr sedan, but to my surprise it is fast, I drive to work on hilly 2 lane state hwy 64 in southern In and there are only 2 places to pass. I finally decided to see what it had and passed a car, it went from 50 mph to 80 mph in an instant, with room to spare, I was shocked at the acceleration, and it was soooo smooth.

Did you have it in the S setting? Does the 2000 model have that? I have been pulled over more in our S70 than any other car that I've owned. That car will run like a deer.

1998 was the last year for the "S" button. Doesn't really make a difference, all that did was slightly change shift points.

Man, I don't know about that. I have read a lot of people write that but there is more to it than that. When I'm in the S setting the car has a more agressive acceleration as well as the shift point changes. I feel that the overall HP output of the motor is limited somewhat when in the E setting, like me pressing 80% throttle instead of 100% when floored. Just MHO.

I did read somewhere that the ETM S70's are programmed to preform according to your driving techniques and adjust the preformance automatically. The downside of that was it takes a few minutes for the car to change preformance levels instead of a flip of a switch you have to drive for a few minutes before the car adjusts.

I agree with the "more aggresive overall" line of thought. I swear I have to actively limit my right foot or it gets away from me! The cool thing is that you don't have to contend with teenagers in their Ricers at every stop sign (although I have heard of a 50+ old guy dropping the hammer on one or two of those 200 decibel, ground effect festooned Civics - not that I would ever do that myself.)

In fact, I'm heading home right now and I kinda feel like making sure that old "S" button still works.......
