I am assuming that you are referring to the shifter "****" and that the reason you want to take it off is that the button is sticky. They actually break but there are repair kits available. IPD gives fairly good instructions also.
To answer your question, lift up as hard as you possibly can - you can't break it.
You do stand a 50/50 chance of having some little muscle or two in your back ache the next day from the awkward position you will be in.
