New to this forum, I am looking at a few different 1998-1999 S70 Glt's all with different ranges in miles, 87-121K and I have a few questions.

First off, I have researched a lot about the PCV system and Was curious as to if I could replace the PCV system without having to remove the intake manifold?

Second, when going to look at one of these cars, what particular things should I look out for and what are some things that will typically need to be replaced or require attention a little more often?

Lastly, are the turbos on these generally reliable? (I mean lasting 150k and over, without any major issues)

My aunt had an 88 740GLE and it had 180k+ on it, as far as I can remember, she never really had any major issues with the car.

 

I recently purchased a 98 s70 w/ 160,000 miles. Here is a list of things wrong with it, some less severe then others:
- stripped out oil drain plug - the only surprise in this list.
- creatively replaced strut bearings
- torque mount bushings
- center console
- radio
- battery terminals
- various little lights which are burned out
- power window buttons

But, these Volvo's appear a lot less crammed and are easier to work on. Your local part store may no longer carry your air filter, though.

I owned a '87 740 GLE that had over 400,000 miles on it and let me tell you, that was one of the best, lowest maintenance cars ever built... The FWD Volvo's are a different creature.

If you are not a DIYer stay away from these amazing cars. No you can not replace the PCV without removing the intake manifold. That only takes about 10 minutes out of the 5 hour process so don't sweet it.

Parts are easy to get for planned maintenance. Order on line and they show up at your door, how easy is that.

 

Thanks For the input, I am a sort of DIY'er and can do most repairs on my own, I am only 17, but I have a good amount of knowledge with working on cars and have some tools to do most repairs.

I just wanted to see if that was the only way of replacing the PCV system.

I checked my local parts store online and they carry some of the basic parts for the car.

 

I would recommend the '98 MY over the '99 - 2003 or so. Research my posts if you're interested in why i would say that. Or you could just ask..
