Default Stereo Upgrade

Hello Everyone,

I just recently purchased a 98 S70 T5 that has the base stereo deck with a cd changer. Years ago I had a 2000 S70 with the premium stereo which sounded much better. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with replacing the base stereo with a premium one? I know I'll also have to change out the speakers but at least I'll have some decent sound while maintaining original components, thanks!

They just slide in and out. Most of the speakers are the same, just the rear deck ones were different in my S70.

You may want to purchase a newer head unit. Those older units are dieing pretty fast now that they are 12+ years old. Radio bands failing, tape decks dragging, static in volume *****, etc. They are just to old.

Look on the classified section and get a SC-900 or a SC-901. You also need to get the amp that fits under the passenger seat. Then you can also get the dolby (only SC-901) add in and the center speaker for the dash, but those are hard to find. The SC-901 and the amp made a big difference for me. Cost me about $150 for both. Make sure you get the wireing also.

I just piced up a '95 wagon that has an after market pioneer in it. Sounds pretty good. You may want to get an entire different system.

I'd go with the SC-900 or 901 route if you want the factory look. This is probably what you had before. However, there's a LOT of neat new tech that's come out since these cars were new, and a decent aftermarket deck can be had for $100-$200. I have a Pioneer that has a USB port I can play my iPod through, an aux- in port for anything that doesn't have USB. This particular deck is a low- end one, and even it sounds great. $150 will get you HD radio, USB, and bluetooth. Until recently, I was a stickler for having EVERYTHING look factory, but I got tired of using a tape adapter for my iPod, and an unobtrusive, non- flashy aftermarket deck looks fine and sounds even better. If I had a newer car, I'd stick with the factory system, but 12 year old technology is 12 year old technology.

Thanks guys you all make great points. To my surprise the CD quality from the changer was really good. I was surprised on how big of a difference it was from the radio. I might just try the Blitzsafe product to pump MP3's from my iPod. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again.
