Default sudden tracs and abs lights

While waiting to pick up a friend I was parked on an incline for several minutes with the car idling. When i went to pull away my ABS and tracs lights were both on. A quick google search points to the ABS module being bad. while this makes sense it seems like while on an incline (fairly steep one) is a peculiar time for it to suddelny fail.

Could this be pointing to some other problem such as a master cylinder failure? Driving without ABS is no problem but driving with no brakes is a major problem.

Any thoughts?

My guess would be the module. You can have codes read and go from there.

if theres three codes read its your module. you can get a cheap refurb from programa. i did the same thing on my 99 s70 a year ago. i got a good deal thru partstrain.com but you should remove it and look and see the arrangement of the boots on the interior side of the module before ordering one because theres two different styles of abs module made for the s70 that i know of. also that web sight when you go through and order you should almost expect to have a little bit of patience with them because you have to send your module in when you get the replacement and get codes over the phone from the pt.com company but over all it may take a month like it did for me to have the core deposit refunded back to my account but since ive done that and reset my computer after. all problems are gone. it is typical after 100k miles sort of

Default Just went through this!

I just went through this. I actually went through 4 junk yard abs modules - they all gave me the exact same problem. My conclusion was "There is no way I got 4 bad modules!" I was wrong!!! After testing my pump, my speed sensors, paying $50 for the dealer to tell me it was the module- I got ballsy. I read a DIY that I found on the internet in 2 different places and cracked open the module. what I found with a magnifying glass and squinty eyes was a bad solder joint on the board. Specifically it was 1 of the 2 pins that go from the module to the pump. I am attaching an image of my exact module.

Hope this helps. PM me and I'll give u my number if u want

So is this a pretty common problem for most Volvos? I'm at 156K on my 98 S70 and my ABS trac cntrl lights are on, course so are my CEL AND service engine lights are on too. I've had her checked and nothing is wrong...anyone else's like that?

This is a very common problem. Like I said, I tried 4 modules on my car and they were all bad so I actually had to fix one. Your CEL should have nothing to do with the ABS/TRACS on a 98. On 99 and newer it will throw a CEL. And as for your service light, that just means its telling you to change the oil. It needs to be reset.
