I've noticed a ticking noise (sounds like lifter tick) that is engine RPM dependant. Any other suspects?

 

The injectors are noisy sometimes.If not the injectors it is the lifters making noise.
If it is the lifters have the oil pressure checked.

 

I talked to a friend that went through Volvo's Mechanic school, he's working at a Volvo dealership now. He said it's either low/old oil, low oil pressure in the head, or the valves need to be adjusted.

 

Hydrolic lifters!!!! the valves are not adjustable unless you replace the lifter caps.(Not likely)
Check oil pressure most likely the oil pan o-rings are bad!!!!!

 

What is the acceptable range for the oil pressure at idle? Where is it checked at, oil sending unit?

 

I too have the same problem with "ticking". I got the O-ring kit and I want to do it myself. So I got the directions how off Volvoforums. Now mine is a little different than the directions so there are 2 questions. My car is a 1998 S70 2.4 L non - turbo. It has no oil cooler(no problem) but there are 2 steel power steering lines that cross underneath the pan. 1) Do you have to disconnect these and move them out of the way or can you snake the pan out without doing that? It looks pretty tight like you really have to jocky the pan to get it out. The directions say two bolts on the transsmission side come out(no problem) however there appears to be at least a couple of bolts on the belt side that may go into the pan too. 2) Do these bolts have to be removed too?

Oil pressure is tested at the oil pressure sender port.
At 750RPM the pressure should be .10MPA/ Maybe about 15PSI (Conversion chart not the best.)
At 4000RPM the pressure should be .35MPA/maybe about 50 to 60 PSI.

For the tranny lines there is 2 brackets on the lines front and back of the subframe once loose you can hold the lines towards the drivers side with a bungie cord.

Any lines that look like they go through the oil pan will need to be removed. There might also be one under the oil filter. But forget haven't done an old one in a while.

Checked the oil pressure at idle at the oil sending port - 40 PSI. So it appears that I have good oil pressure. I plan to install the O-rings next. Hopefully this takes care of the ticking.

Tech - With oil pressure of 40 PSI (cold - sitting all day) do you think installing the o-rings will have a significant effect? The ticking is intermittent(comes and goes) now when I am running around town, to and from work, etc....

I took a trip to Florida last week, 570 miles each way and the ticking got a lot worse on the last half of the trip. It got to be all the time at idle instead of intermittent and was much louder like it was several lifters making noise. Almost like a deisel. I got pretty concerned about it. Now that I am back the ticking is much less than before I left. I have kept my oil topped up all the time and I don't use very much anyway. The oil I used to use was 10W30, Mobil I. I now use 15W50 Mobil I thinking it could make a difference.. No change in the behavior. Ambient temperature when I left town on the trip was 32 and gradually got to 70 on the trip going down. While there it was 65-85 and coming back gradually got back to 32 degrees. Since then the temp has been 40 - 70 here.

So I am at a loss to understand it. So should I skip the O-rings and go to the lifters? If I do go to the lifters, should I take them out and clean them in a parts washer and/or manually? Any other thoughts?

I would start with the o-rings. They are cheaper and alot easier to do.
If one of them are leaking when the oil got on the hotter side/Thinner side that could explain it getting worse on a long drive.

Where in Florida were you?

 

15W-50 in a Volvo in freezing conditions is not doing the engine any good! In my manual, at desert conditions 50 weight oil is not reccommended and 15 weight at start up at 0 degrees centigrade?????????????//

I think the o-rings should fix it.

 

So I replaced the O-Rings. Its a pretty good job too. Put the oil back to 10W30.

No Ticking for 1 month now.
