Default Turbo Audibility

This is just a question of curiosity..

I've got a '98 GLT and I can only hear my turbo spool if my windows are shut, and stereo turned off/really low, are the 16T's, 18T's & 19T's louder than my 13g? or is it because of the CBV rather than BOV that it is rather quiet?

I love the sound, just wish I heard it more..
Never driven a T5 or an R, any owners opinions?

There is a gaget that you can purchase to make the turbo sound louder. It's like a speaker for the thing. I have an 850 R and can hardly hear my turbo as well. Pretty faint.

You shouldn't really be able to hear it unless you are running a BOV or an Air intake or a combo of both with an exhaust..Otherwise it's fairly quiet. My GLT It's non exhistant as far as being audible.. Which is good, so I can sneak up on people and then go BOO! lol...

Rspi: Do you know the name of this gadget you speak of? I'm interested in researching it..

Somthngfrce: HAHAHA this is true, alot of people don't expect such acceleration out of a brick, man that made me "LOL"

My buddy has an Audi A6 2.7T - twin turbo, it sounds absolutely nasty from even a block away, the turbos spooling, I know this sound isn't possible, but to get more noise than stock? It's an automatic, so I don't think I'll do a BOV. What are some opinions on an EST intake on their automatic GLT, if any?

1. You can do a BOV. However on the automatic it will only go off once you let off the gas. Not to mention you'll run RICH for the split second it vents to the atmosphere. I had one before on my 1999 s70 awd (13g turbo) and it got annoying I was loosing vacuum like crazy.

2. I have the EST intake. You wont gain much performance. Maybe 5-8 Hp is that, but you wil lgain sound. It creates a very nice grunt when you smash the pedal.

I'll try and get a video/audio clip of it for you.

or, you could just burn a cd with a turbo noise on it, and play it really loud on the radio when you accelerate.

Burn a CD! Nice, haha.

Really though, in order to make your turbo's sound more prevalent the air flow around it has to be freed up. That can happen via header, exhaust, BOV, intake, etc.

The size of the turbo makes a huge difference as well, along with whether it is ball bearing or not. I have an 18G on my car which is pretty loud with my intake, however if I had a stock air box which also comes with an intake silencer, I wouldn't hear my turbo much at all either.

At full boost it isn't as significant of a turbo "spooled up" noise as my old VF22, only because the 18g isn't ball bearing like the VF22 is.

OR! You could buy a dual ball bearing T51R like this Supra guy did =].

Haha, yeah. Just an example though. That car has like, a 5 inch inlet with barely even a filter on it and 4 inch catless exhaust.
