Default Volvo coolant necessary? S70 T5

Is Volvo coolant necessary or can I use one of those types that says it works for all cars? The coolant overflow tank was empty when I bought the car and since I cant open the radiator cap (doesnt have one) and look in, I dont know what type is in the car. I put some water in just because I dont know how low it is. If other brands are ok, do you think its necessary to drain n flush the system? Thanks!

Green. Not the orange GM stuff. And use distilled water.

Since you have no idea how old, what type, what ratio, what kind of water is in there now, or when it was last flushed (if ever) now WOULD be a good time to flush it.

And maybe it's just me, but when I flush a radiator I like to inspect hoses and replace as needed.

Thanks, I was thinking of flushing it too. Hoses all look good. Good advice!
