99 Volvo S70 GLT "Surging" Noise - YouTube

Got it back from the dealer and it was a lot louder and surging. What's causing this?

No RPM fluctuations or any abnormal readings.

Bad cat? Exhaust manifold? Bad muffler?

What did the dealer do to the car? What work was performed?

Ended up being just a routine oil change.

That story is in the Low Pressure Light During Right Turns thread.

It's gotten to the point now that I wish I had ear plugs when I approach 3000 RPM.

Can't do anything until the weekend though.

Is it the ticking or the hollow sound that you are hearing?

I'd like to know what's causing the ticking (lifter?) but what was more of a concern was why it sounded like the car was revving (or even breathing, if that makes sense) while it was idle.

Just took this one and gave it a little rev. Can't really hear the ticking because my car sounds like a tank now. This all just happened one morning. Car was fine. Nothing out of the ordinary, got the oil chaged, and now all of this at once.

Car doesn't have any rough idling issues. When I first started to hear the "surges" I thought maybe the ETM was dirty and sticking, but that would be visible on my rev counter and it's like a rock.

I should mention that the clip holding the exhaust tip up is gone. Ordered a new one and should have it ready to go this weekend. I don't think the extra slack is the culprit though.

Sounds like pretty major exhaust leak; probably around the exhaust manifold.

I was thinking maybe around the ball joint.

So I took it to Meineke today and lo and behold. It was a leak. Sort of.

Clean break all the way through. Got a sleeve on for $50 and it is such a relief.
