Why is my air conditioning blowing hot air and making this weird sound?

Default Why is my air conditioning blowing hot air and making this weird sound?

Hi. Longtime forum lurker here. You guys have saved me a few times and I'm hoping that you'll be up to the challenge of listening to this strange sound that my air conditioning is making:

http://nowindowsproductions.com/weir...ning_sound.mp3

Here's the problem:
The air conditioning is moderately cool and then after about 5 minutes of driving it starts pushing out hotter and hotter air until it's like the heat is on (notice that it's summer in PA).

My local mechanic replaced the freon, but that didn't fix it. He didn't know what to do. Maybe the sound that I've linked above will provide the answer?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Is the compressor kicking on? Have you checked the clutch gap?

The care is a Volvo S70 from 1999/2000. Sorry I forgot to mention that. Two questions:

1) Does the sound I linked sound like it's the compressor clutch problem that the video describes?
2) If I'm not comfortable with a hack like the zipties, is it cheap just to replace the compressor clutch?

That is your call. You should be able to tell if the compressor is actually kicking on or not. I have NOT listened to the sound link you provided. I'm kind of afraid to do much more than watch a video on my computer, with all the junk floating around on the internet these days. It is easier to do a video and upload it to YouTube than make a sound recording and hosting it somewhere.
