I had bought one of these for my supercharged regal before I sold it. I had bought this same one long time ago for another car for $50 at advanced auto.

its a dry flow AEM and its cheap.

I will tell you that if I bought an S70 that had a rigged up air filter assy like that, I'd toss it in the dumpster and replace it with OEM parts.

Waste of time/money.

 

are you telling me that everyone here uses a flat panel filter and nothing else?

I am just not a big fan of oiled filters since it gets sucked into the system and gets the maf dirty.

is that not a problem with the s70?


or are you just talking personal preference?

 

I've NEVER had an air filter sucked up into the MAF. The paper filters used by Volvo are perfectly fine.

If you do get one sucked up into the air intake, you have more problems than a dirty air filter.

I like OEM designs. They have more engineering resources than any of us combined.

 

You won't find a better filtration media than a pleated paper element. And they're cheap enough to replace very regularly, ensuring optimum airflow always.
They also filter way down below what those cheapo filters do and you can't over oil them and kill performance.
No car built in the last 20 years has a restrictive air intake box. Some have sound suppressing snorkels etc fitted pre box and it's far better to remove these snorkels or otherwise modify the stock airbox. The stock airbox also ensures the MAF isn't subject to unusual vibrations etc which will shorten it's lifespan.

 

I was talking about the oil from the K&N that makes its way up to the maf on some cars. I wasnt talking about a filter getting sucked.

I prefer flat panel filter in the stock box but the filter I asked about is about 1/2 or more cheaper than what it sells for normally and its a dry filter.

I am most likely going to get a K&N anyhow ...they do sell them at the volvo sites

 

Cold- air intakes and short ram intakes do have some very minimal benefits on some cars. Our cars- the turbo models, anyway, can benefit from a setup like what IPD sells, that replaces the stock air box with a cone filter and- most importantly- a heat shield. This reduces the temperature of the incoming air when you're moving down the road. However, again, the performance benefit is minimal, and oiled cone filters really don't filter as well. Using a good quality dry cone filter, like your AEM filter, is okay, but again, the cost of the kit and the like makes the cost- benefit equation fail here. You're talking, at MOST 1 horsepower, for over $100. And a slight risk of engine damage. Also, any of these aftermarket air filters/ air intakes are NOISY. You will eventually get tired of the incessant hiss of intake air passing through an un- attenuated intake. Stick with a good quality paper or dry linen panel air filter, like the OEM intended.

If you actually want to do something with your car to improve performance, go with a quality less- restrictive exhaust system. But again, the car will be noisy as a result.
