i have a 1999 s80 2.9 with the following issues:

- rough idle / choking / loss of power
- engine requires urgent service (something like that) andexhaustcodes coming up
- black smoke
- rotten egg smell
- cylinder #5 not working
- strong gas smell from under hood,looks like maybeleaking gas, i guess due to cylinder #5 not working

If the car hasn't ran for a while then it runs good for a bit and all of a sudden it starts running rough and I get all of the above symptoms. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The rough idle is probably a software issue. Have you had the software update?

The other problems sound like mechanical issues. You could always take the car to the mechanics and get a free diagnostic on what the problem is. Once you know what's wrong you can decide whether to fix it yourself or let them do the work ($$$).

 

Sounds like you might either have a bad coil pack or a bad injector.
But you could also have more problems.

You need to have the codes pulled and see where they lead you.

 

I had the rough idle, i.e. it would bouce from 1k-500 range and then repeat... the dealer did a software update and it doesn't do it anymore.

 

all of the other problems are probably being caused by a single other problem... happened when i had my old turbo car getting too much gas vs air.

The guy said cyclinder #5 not working. Yes, that's the problem.

The question is, how do youknow #5 if not working?
If you guess, then that's a good guess. Fix it.
If you someone told you, then maybe that someone also told you what the problem is. Fix it.
