Default 2.9 oil usage, 1L every 3000KM

Hello all,

I have a problem with my 1999 S80 2.9 with 268000KM on it. Actually to be honest I don't know if it is a problem or not but it uses 1L oil every 3000km. We got the car with 241.000km, the first 5000km were mostlysmall hopsbut for the last 9 months and 22.000kmI have driven trips of300km twice a week (mostly with a fully loaded car). it has been serviced before we got it and at 265.000km. The garage can't find anything wrong with the car but it does trouble me. Is it a known problem with the 2.9 engine? It doesnt leak oil on the groundnor isthere black smoke comming from he exhaust.

Edit
also, when stepping out of the car (hangin with my facequite low to the ground)on the drivers side (left side) while it is hot and running you can smell oil.

If you are smelling oil, then you have an oil leak somewhere.
Maybe some one can help you find the leak.

Thanks for the reply, the last time it was serviced the garage said they couldntfind any leaks (i have searched before but couldnt find any myself). After reading so much about the O rings of the oil pan I thoughti'd give it anothershot and I found a leak, it is on the bottem right side (passenger side). Thisprobably is the oil pan? I'm going to the garage tomorrow to see how much it will cost me to repair. Is it a big problem driving with a leaking oil pan?

PS: any idea how long it takes to repair for a proffesional garage?

Luckly I haven't had an issue with my O-rings so I can't tell you much. (Moderator) Tech can probably explain it better.
I am sure it is not good for the car, but like I said I am not sure.

Good luck Hope they can fix it for you.

Oke just been to the garage, they say the leak is to small for 1 liter per 3000km and its only sweating a bit which is oke for a car this age. The usage of 1 liter per 3000km is normal for these cars with these kilometers and I have to start worring when it rises to 1L per1000km,can you confirm that Tech?

Greetings

I know sorry going by milage cause thats what I know it is about normal to loose one quart between oil changes on these cars.
If you have a small leak it would leak a little more.

You are also high milage as well so it might use a little more.

Also if the vent system is clogged it will make it use more as well.

Thanks, how can I check if the vent system is clogged up? I have a 2500km trip planned in a couple of weeks and want it to be in tip top shape.

Usually you won't know for sure unless you pull it apart or have someone inspect the system. There is a small hose under the intake on the r/s of the car by the power steering pump. You can remove the small hose and inspect the nipple and see if it is clogged.
