2001 S80 T6 Engine Surging
My son's car, 2001 S80 T6 with 170K miles, developed something new today...a surging engine. I read just about every thread that had "surging" in it, and no one mentioned theirs happened suddenly. Maybe some people's car actually did, but they didn't mention it. His did. No CEL though.
He had the ETM replaced about a year ago. I'll have to ask him if he meant replaced or software updated. Saw a real good website about how the plastic strip wears out. Updating software is just supposed to make the surging happen later, or minimize it.

He was accelerating to pass someone and he said something in the engine area went "plink", and then the engine started to rev up, then down. Idle is pretty bad also -- it stalled on him a couple of times arriving at his work's parking lot. The surging seems to do some of it on its own, he says. Guess I'd like to see it myself.
I asked him does the car's speed increase/decrease with the RPM's...he said the when he had the ETM fixed, the car itself also sped up / slowed with the RPM's, but now seems like the car speed does not follow the RPM's, which would mean a transmission problem. He's going to verify that later.
The last time I had a car that went "plink", 1st gear broke. The engine never surged, though.
That doesn't explain the poor idling, though.
A question:
1) in all the posts I see mentioned the following, and some have said replacing this/these fixed the problem :
boost control module
turbo control module
turbo control valve
Are these all just the same item ? Maybe some posters are just using wrong terms...that happens.
ALLDATAdiy's not helping much.
Thx -- More later.

Does it mainly surge during idle? And does your tach seem to hunt when idle?
Even though you replaced the ETM. It may be a recurring problems
My 01 S80 did the same think, new ETM and a year later, back to surging and rough idle.
You may consider cleaning your ETM before you do anything else $5 and 2 hours. heres how

If you car is surging while driving, this may not be the issue.
Hope this helps.
