Default 2003 S80 Cluster Problem

Hey guys I'm a new member and I have a question and I hope you guys can help me out. Sorry I'm a totally newbie.

I just bought my very first Volvo, a used 2003 Volvo S80. I really love the car. I drove it for a week and noticed that sometimes when I drove the gauges would completely turn off. The car drives fine (really strong in fact it only has 90K miles) but I am not able to see my speed, RPM's or fuel. If I press the trip button the lights will come back on but then shut off as soon as I release the button. I took the car to the Volvo dealer in my area and they told me they "suspect an internal failure of the instrument cluster" and they said I need to pay $2300 to have the entire cluster replaced and then checked again. Is that right? I've checked other forums and this cluster problem seems to be a known issue. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks in advance. Any help is appreciated

You can send it to BBA Reman and get it fixed for $190 with a lifetime warranty. It takes 5 minutes to take it out and another 5 to put it back in. Then you go to the dealer or an independent Volvo shop to have the SRS light reset. I had $538 in mine including a rental car for a week and expedited shipping. You can find BBA on ebay.
