Hi all. I found a local '04 S80 I am considering purchasing as a work car. The car is priced at $2300, I think I can get it though for about $2000. I have never owned a Volvo before, but my uncle has owned a few daily 80s 240 models and a 2000s XC90. The one I am considering is white and it has 171k miles. It looks good inside and out and supposed to run good, but the check engine light is on. Can some place like AutoZone run the codes on this car? Also wondering about what common trouble spots I should look for. My uncle said that his XC90 had computer issues that he heard was common - not sure if that is also true for the S80. I am used to mainly Japanese vehicles and have owned a few (and still own) a German car, but never a Volvo. Should I walk or buy? Thanks!
yes any OBD2 sensor can read the check engine codes. I have a $39 from Harbor Freight and I've also used Autozone to borrow a scanner for my S40, Toyota and VW. Post up what codes are found.
I recommend getting an OBD2 scanner for yourself. They're truly invaluable in troubleshooting almost ANY car. I got a BAFX scanner from Amazon and it uses a bluetooth connection to my phone and does the web lookup from an app.
Also, ironically, I just got my first Volvo, an S80 2.5 AWD. High miles, and a beat up interior but the running bits are doing their job just fine. I also came here to learn the common issues. You beat me to making such a thread.
