Default 2004 S80 Transmission won't engage in D or 3.

My 2004 S80 non-turbo with the GM automatic transmission suddenly developed a problem yesterday. The transmission won't engage when the gear selector is put into 'D' or '3'. It will engage just fine when put into 'R', '2', or '1'. The transmission fluid is clean and at the correct level. The check engine light also came on, but I haven't been able to read the code.

Up until now there have been no signs of trouble, no slipping, no weird shifting, etc. Any ideas??? Thanks.

Bingo! Thanks for the reply. I found the same web site earlier today. Their description of the problem completely correlates with what I'm seeing. I'm going to check with a local shop that specializes in GM transmissions and get their take on the subject. I may go with them, or end up going with a rebuilt from Triple Edge, they seem to know their stuff. Anyone out there ever dealt with them?
I hate to spend so much money on a 10 year old car, but the rest of the car is near mint condition.
