Cool 2009 Volvo S80 stalls when starting only when engine is warm

On cold starts, the car functions perfectly normal. If I'm bouncing around town running errands, on the 3rd or 4th start, when I hit the ignition button, the engine turns over for a couple seconds, struggles to keep RPMs and then stalls. If I try a few more times, it usually starts up. If I give it a bit of gas as soon as I hit the ignition button, it also starts. Check engine light comes on if it stalls more than twice but goes away after a few day. Very strange that this only happens when the engine is warm and after I've had multiple start / stops leading up to the problem. Never an issue the first time I start the car that day.

Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Greg

Greg

If I were in your position I would look at two things first

1. Verify that nothing is different about the hot re-start (for example do you leave the key docked when you go inside for a few minutes, my vehicle will do exactly what you describe if I leave the key docked with the engine off for several minutes)

assuming that #1 isn’t the answer let’s move on to #2

2. The fuel system is return less, which means that the pump changes speed to control the pressure. When the engine is cold the system has no pressure until the pump turns on. When the system is hot there is residual pressure. The only way the fuel system knows the pressure is from the sending unit on the fuel rail. If the sending unit isn’t working correctly it can cause the type of problems you described

good luck

Thanks Paul!

Great suggestions.

My Volvo stalled on me when I was driving last week, which it had never done before, so I brought it in for service. Unfortunately, the mechanic was unable to reproduce problem. He had a hunch that it was the fuel pressure sensor but wasn’t certain. I had him replace it and since then the car has been running perfect, no stalling during start up any longer. I can’t be certain but I think that was the problem. Fingers crossed.

Greg,

That's great news.

Post here if you have any further questions.

Take care
