Default 99 S80 ETM Problem

I have a 99 S80 2.9 with an ETM problem. Took it to a volvo specialist (not a Volvo dealer) and they said it needs a new ETM and that only a dealer can do that because it has to be "programmed".

Do only new ETMs have to be programmed or even used ones (if I swap one off my 99 X70 or find a used one somewhere)?

Yes, the ETM has to be "married" to the car by the dealer and I doubt you will find a dealer who will do it with a used ETM. A better way to go, in my opinion, is a rebuild by http://xemodex.com/, which will use a non-contacting sensor in the ETM so that you don't have any problems in the future. Since they don't change the ETM itself, no programming is necessary. You just remove the ETM, send it in, they send it back, and you bolt it back on.

Ya, I've been doing some research and I think that's the way I'm going to go.

Also, I am getting P0121, P0171, P0174, P0134 and P0154 DTC's on it. P0121 I think is the throttle position sensor... most likely because of the ETM right?. The rest are O2 sensor codes, do you think the ETM could be causing the O2 sensor codes?

the TPS codes should go off if the ETM gets fixed, but not 100% on the O2 sensors, they could be a misread or you could really have to change them. If you've noticed a decrease in performance and mileage since the O2 codes came on I'd look into it.

I just pulled the ETM and it has a yellow sticker on it. Do the upgraded/replaced ones (with the yellow sticker) still have problems? My 99 S80 has 113,000 miles on it

Oh and I don't think my ETS light is on, but it runs really badly. It will stumble, hesitate, etc. Where is the ETS light on a 99 S80 and what does it look like, and what does it mean if this light isn't on?

Yes, they still wear out just like the originals.

Question

Hello my name is Allen, I'm new to the forum and new to Volvo's. I'm not tring to hyjack your thread but I have been looking for info for days and this is the closest thing I can find to my problems...

I have a 99' S80 T6 and it won't go over 20 mph, we put a scanner on it and it come back as the TPS, all I can find is the one from the dealership that is $700+ and then $160 for them to put it on.

So really my questions are....

Is the ETM and the TPS the same thing?

If not, by sending my ETM to http://xemodex.com/ will that fix my problem..

If it won't where is the cheapest place I can find one?

Thanks in advance,
Allen.

if your car is idling real bad, try cleaning your ETM first? Real easy, this vid shows how.
