What would cause an alternator failure? Dealing with the same issue.

 

The regulator/Brush pack goes bad.
They are replacable and cost about $70.00 or so.

 

Spoke to the local rebuild shop. Yup he confirmed that the brush pack is a common failure on this unit. $50.00. He would even test it for me.

But would leakage from a switch or relay cause this part to fail? Maybe from working too much to charge the battery? Just a thought.

 

I doubt it.
Kind of a poor setup.

 

im getting 14.3 at the alternator yet my battery keeps going dead what else should we be looking at?

a few months ago I had problems with what I thought was my voltage regulator... those seemed to go away but now but car has not starteda few timesthis week and I needed to get it jumped. My car never dies will on and still runs great, also the radio/lights other things seem to work but it just does not seem to have enough power to start the engine.

Any suggestions on what I should get checked out? is it the battery the regulator? I don't think its the alternator because wouldn't the car slowly die will driving if the alternator had issues?

Also, the battery has a ventilation hose, what is the deal with this? If i get a replacement battery does it have to be the exact model number for the hose?

I was going to take the battery to a autozone place and have them charge it, not sure if they charge it or exchange my old battery with another one, do I have to make sure that the new one has a spot for this hose?

 

Make sure the Alt is putting out good voltage.
No on the battery it doesn't have to have a drain hose on the new one.

 

Just a quick question, is there a name to how the alternator is setup? is it "J180" or somethin like that?

Reason I ask is that I found an altenator on Ebay that claims to fit a volvo s80 t6, but puts out 270amps at1500 rpms, but they say it's a J180 setup that just directly replaces the altenator in a stock s80 t6.....thoughts, ideas ?

Hey my car doesnt get the message battery voltage low but its been three times and all the warning lights were on STC ABS SRS replace the batterry car runs fine for about 20 miles restart the car again battery dead then charged it it on only run for about 10 minutes the car shut off could be the voltage regulator or the alternator???????????????
