Are you sure the 4 rear position light bulbs are on and bright?

It's a bad taillight bulb. Make sure all four are correct and working.

thanks for the quick reply, I swapped out the four position bulbs, and they glow bright, could it be a bulb holder going bad?

They could be the wrong wattage. Those 4 bulbs are the only ones that will cause that message.

Default I have had the same problem on two S80s

Kicked a code, but lights worked when checked. Remove code, good, but would kick a code on go.

Problem. Had to replace every bulb on the rear on both cars, was smarter on the second, thou.

Issue: Instead of cone shape contacts on bulbs, the the contacts were worn and dimpled inverted. Bulbs still worked. Cost about $33 for good quality bulbs and problem fixed. For good.

You don't have to replace all the bulbs. Just the 4 position bulbs with the correct bulbs.

my Volvo tech pal told me that some early s80 cars require a position bulb with a yellow base, so I got the four bulbs from Volvo at a cost of 7.50 and it fixed it, thanks again for the help, happy holidays!
