I am looking to buy a used Volvo S80 or a S60. Some people tell me to buy the S60 and keep away from the S80. I thought that the S80 was the top of the range for Volvo and is a luxury car that is very good.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Year, budget, etc.?

I have a 01 S80, great until around 60,000 miles, then $1K per in maintenance. I do much myself but I've not been thrilled.

Most will agree, great cars until they get older. 04's are probably better, but still lot's of issues reported on these forums.

Depening on budget, considered Lexus, Acura?

 

if you want an s80 get an 04 or later i just got a 04 t6 with 61k for 10.8k car is unbelievable and suppose to have most of the bugs worked out especially the tranny problems.

 

This may sound funny BUT.... check for keys and remotes. Both can cost a couple $100s EACH and some can only be made and programed by a dealer.
Check and then check again.

I can highly recommend a web subscription to Consumer Reports, and looking over their detailed repair frequency statistics charts on used Volvos (and any other car). Extremely helpful - I think the value of that knowledge is worth 10x the $30 or so they charge for the subscription.
