Unhappy Can Anyone Give Me An Idea About How Much This Should Cost?

Hey guys,

I have a 2003 Volvo S80. I just got the car towed to the dealership and it looks like the driver-side front strut coil/spring broke. They want to replace both the coils in the front and they're quoting me about $1600 to do everything. I feel like this is a little high, can anyone give me some advice on what this should cost?

Thanks much.

You can do this yourself for a small fraction of that cost...

You should either do it yourself or have a private shop do it. The dealerships cost way too much.

Double that price, and that is what it could cost for the parts. Dealerships just have very high labor costs.

FCP Groton is a great place to get Volvo parts cheep. Trouble is getting a place that will use parts you buy, but a few shops will do it - my local Sunoco guy does it for me. I would guess something like 3-4 hours labor on top of whatever you pay for parts... so less than half what the dealer quoted, in any case.

Depending on how old your struts are, there is an arguement for replacing the front struts and spring seats at the same time, by the way (pulling the springs is the hard part). Check FCP Groton - they have all that.
