Changing strut bearings... question!

Changing strut bearings... question!
Over a period of several months I have changed the struts (Monroe OE Spectrum), strut mounts (Moog), Sway bar links (Moog), one wheel bearing/hub (NAPA-china ), and lower control arms (FCP? I forget..), the Upper torque mount bushing assy (FCP, IPD, IDK, LOL?).
I am very happy with the ride and handling now, but still getting a bit of a clicking sound at times. I am thinking of replacing the strut bearings and having had them apart so many times, I was wondering- will the strut mount with its cross nut hold the spring compressed so that I can change the strut bearing, or do I still have to compress the spring?
I am sure "for safety's sake" that a spring compressor is a good idea, but if the mount is solid steel inside (and brand new)- and since it really only supports the spring form the center where it contacts the bearing- I would suspect it would not be necessary. Or at the very least, I could just take a bit of tension off with a spring compressor.
So, has anyone ever done this?
By the way, IDK how the Monroe Sensatracks performed- most here said "Buick Dynaride", but the Monroe OE Spectrums are pretty tight. Everything in the passenger compartment that can rattle now rattles- glove box door, arm rest, door panels.... It is for sure a very taught ride, and I have rattles I never heard before. I also only paid about $65/strut from Pep Boys with a 20% off coupon I found on their website.
