I am new to the volvo s80 adventure.. just picked up a 1999 s80.. with 60k on it.. So yes I know there are going to be some interesting gremlins in this car.. but I am 6'2 250 and love the size and ride..

Anyway.. my check engine light just came on.. but now error message on the lcd.. I tighten the gas cap but is seemed tight.. any suggestions where to start... is there an error code book or something that is out there that would help.. also .. anyone use a scanner.. if so any suggestions which one to get.. might as well get ready to own this car lol

I picked up an Innova 3130 off eBay. It seems to link up but currently reports no codes or freeze frame data. Maybe this might be a silly question, but are you sure you have a check engine light and not the "Service" light?

 

the lcd I meant was the car dash.. I am getting the check engine light.. the car is running fine.. but today.. and once the other day the car just stalled .. today it was at speed on the hiway.. the other day it was just after I started it.. I am thinking maybe fuel filter.. but would the car throw a code for that?

 

Has it had the software update for the ETM?

 

yes.. the software update was just done a month ago..

 

Hmmmm...I would take it to the dealership and just do a diagnostic for you, and then you can decide how to address the issue.

 

i'm having the same problem, it just came on yesterday while driving (it was pretty hot out about 85 degrees, and had the ac running). but i have also noticed that when i accelerate from a dead stop my car bogs a little and i have to give it alot more gas to get it going... i also drive a 99 volvo s80...
are you having that same problem, or does anyone else know whats going on.....

 

Same problem; 2K s80 with 105k, hot day A/C on check engine came on about a month ago, no other messages. Unplug the batt. one day light went away for a little while and came back. Still on. My timing belt was done a month prior.

 

I use OBDII, works really nice, although the code listing in the book isn't for volvo, you can generally look it up online. Grab one, I think they're around $100 USD.
