Default considering 2001 S80

Hi...Looking at some S80s and would love some advice.

The first is a T6 off lease with 63K going for $12,700 at a Volvo dealer. It is surging and the dealer said that it needed a TB cleaning (they had it in the back of the dealership for that purpose), they are also doing an alignment as it is pulling hard right. How can I know if a cleaning of the TB is enough or does it need a replacement? How about the software on the TB, what needed to be done there?

The second is a 2000 NA with 72K going for $13K at carmax...slower, which it not the end of the world for me.

Iread here varied stories oftrannyhorror stories, some say that the '01 is Ok some say that it was not fixed until '03. Some say that a sw upgrade fixes all of them...help???

(I'm also looking at an '01XC70 with 85K for $13,500 and a 2000S70 with 85K for $8900 with an idle issue...any advice these is also welcome)

Also check autotrader.com because they have a lot of Volvo's for sale on there too.. definitely take whichever car/suv you really want to an independent Volvo mechanic to check it out before you buy.

Agreed! I love driving my fiance's S80 2.9L but it does have it's quirks as do most cars. Just seems to be more finicky than most cars I have owned. Do those prices include warranties?

I bought my 2005 2.5T S80 for $16,200 with 34,000 miles in December at a dealerhsip in Cleveland OH. I think the prices you're getting are very HIGH for the cars you are looking at.

yea i just picked up a 99' s80 t6.. loaded with all options except the gps. all servicing done on time by the dealership and it is sweet. i paid 7000 out the door including tax tittle and fees. i knows it older but its in awsome shape and about half the price.. (although i think there might be a boost problem as it doesnt always seem to accelerate the same but i dont know for sure yet) id say keep shopping till you find a gem cause they are out there. i test drove a black 2000 t6 and it was literaly like it just came off the assy line. they said it had been in a minor fender bender but i couldnt find anything on the car that would have led me to believe it had been in a wreck.. because of that they only wanted 5000... the only reason i didnt get it was because they couldnt tell me one way or the other if the airbags had been deployed and if so that they were installed professionaly again.. and since i was buying this car 50% because of safety i didnt get it.. i wonder if i should have....

Great advice...
What are the 3-5 things I should look for in a 01ish S80 to indicate problems? (I'm mostly worried about the tranny and TB)

My only concern for you re the '01 XC70 would be the idle issue - could be/quite possibly be a dyeing gearbox - very expensive to replace.
