Default cranks good but will not start

2001 s80 with 2.9 engine. car has been running with no problems. My wife left work and came home.(3.5 miles) with no problems. About 2 hours later I went to start the car and it just cranks ,does not even fire or mis fire. After many trys I killed battery. The gas tank was on "E". but code said 50 miles to empty. I went got 3 gallons of gas. And got a jump. After 2 or 3 trys of cranking the engine started I held the down a little 0n the gas pedal. and the engine was running at about 2000 rpms for 10 secounds. so I took my foot of the gas pedal and the engine died. Tryed to restarted but just cranked did not even fire a little.. any ideas,, thanks so much

Load test the battery. Sounds like a marginal battery.

I have had this problem in the past with my 850 but usually after several weeks of not being run but an interesting thing happened recently. I blew a head gasket and when I got the car towed back home I tried starting and it of course wouldn't. I took the spark plugs out and saw that 3 were just a tiny bit wet.
I looked in the cylinders and saw water in some of them. I used a hose to blow out the water [a messy job!] and that bad boy started right up.

Point here is, check the plugs and look in the cylinders.
