Default Daytime running lights

[align=left]Hi, i was wondering if the only way to turn off the running lights was to take the car to the dealer? I have a 2000 s80 and i'm putting in the HID's and don't want the running lights. Thanks, Chris

1. Look to the left of your sterring wheel. There should be the light switch, that you can switch from Day Time Running lights to just Parking lights or whatever they are called and then Low Beams. If there is a little screw like object on that dial face somewhere you can do it yourself by turning it. I forget which way.

If you don't have this then you have to go to the dealership to have it done.

2. In most places Day Time Running Lights are mandatory. Not to mention they make you more visable during the day. Yeah it might be really sunny and clear outside but DRL's will make you that much more visable. I run LOW beams all the time and I have HID's.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have that adjustment you mentioned. It's not so much the daytime lights as the load on the HID's of on and off during say startup. Isn't it bad for the lights to startup then shutdown then shutdown again?

You can leave them in the on position, they will turn off when the car goes off. And the dealer just quoted me $90 to get the daytime running lights software removed. It's just a software download so I didn't want to throw 90 bucks on that.

All these people that want DRL's turned off why?

If there is any load on them what is the difference?

1. Having them come on when the car turns on.

2. Having them turn on after the car is turned on and you turn on your LOW beams since your DRL's are deactivated.

What's the difference? Oh yeah they wont be on during the day time.

DRL'S = Daytime Running Lights. There is a reason we have them. To be visible, to be safe.

I'm with you on that one S70 Driver. I don't understand why anybody would make an effort to stop your lights from running during the day. Especially when stopping the DRL's could potentially cause more issues for you with the electrical or light systems on the car.

My reason is because i'm putting in HID's and it's not good on the bulbs or the transformers. I think you've got me wrong i'm not against DRL's, but with the HID's I don't want them.

I'm running HID's right now have been for a few months actually more then just a few months.

1. I run LOW beams all the time. They come on when I turn the ignition on.

2. I never run DRL's, but they are still activated and ready to use whenever I want to use them.

3. I have had no problems with my HID's and again I have had them for a good 5-6 months.

4. What is the difference from the HID's turning on with the car when you turn the ignition on and turning the car on and then your LOW beams. Load is load. Also if a car manufactuer makes DRL's there is obviously not a problem with too much load. In fact your HID's should be running less wattage anyways if you got the 35W kit. Since I do believe stock bulbs run off of 55W. You can get 55W HID's too but I am currently running 35W with no problems. Also there is a reason HID's come with everything they do. Ballasts act as really their power source.

I have been wanting to turn off my DRL's as well, but not willing to give the stealer $90 to do it either. Although I do agree it's good safety feature, it really takes a toll on the bulbs - especially for those of us who run the conventional top of the line halogen bulbs (Osram Silverstars, in my case). As it is, they have a life expectancy of ~1 year "with normal use," whatever that means. They usually don't make it to the one year mark. I don't have a lot of scientific evidence to prove it, but intuition tells me that constant short trips starting and stopping the engineduring the day will probably take a serious toll on the life of the bulbs. Thus, I want my option to use them or not. Just my $0.02...

If it put that much of a toll on the bulbs the manufactuerer wouldn't have it as an option.

1. I ran Silverstars for at least a year no problems.

2. I have run my HID's for 6 months no problems.

Not to mention HID's use ballasts which act as their own private power source to ignite the bulbs.

I'm jealous. not only of your HID's but of the fact that your S80 does not seem possessed like, mine, with an insatiable appetite for money (LOL)

Maybe it is because I don't own a S80. I own a s70. But it shouldn't matter.

I live in CA, there's absolutely no need for Daytime running lights. It is ridiculousthat the dealer has to charge owners to have it turn off. Yes, I hate them too. But then again, pay the stealer to have them turn off is not worth paying for new lights.

Why would anyone want it off? Well, let's say you pull up to a friend's house. You don't want to turn off the car, but you like to turn off the head lights that point straight into their living room (your girl friend's parents). F... this car, you can't do that.

And just you cause you like it so much, you just don't see why people don't like it. I'm mean the damm thing is on all the time unless you turn of the ignition. There are time you just don't want the lights on period. The inability to turn it off during night time is what sucs about it.

Volvo lovers will never admit anything bad about it.
