EMERGENCY "Stop Safely and Restart Engine"

EMERGENCY "Stop Safely and Restart Engine"
~2000 S80 T6~
So I'm driving like normal and I my car starts losing acceleration and the message "Stop Safely and Restart Engine" comes up. So I pull over and do so, but when I restart the car, the engine turns over but immediately dies. I decide to disconnect and reconnect the battery and the car starts. I get "Engine Service Urgent" and "Engine Service Required" messages that come up. The car drives for a while, but does the same "Stop Safely and Restart Engine" after some driving... I was out of town when this happened so I had to just keep fiddle with the battery every time it happened til I got home.
Took it to a volvo mechanic and he checked out the car, but didn't find anything regarding this... i did get a tune up, spark-plugs, oil change but it happened again. Since i had to disconnect the batter the codes weren't in the computer at the time i brought it in. The "Engine Service Urgent" and "Engine Service Required" messages stay depending on how long i leave the battery disconnected. I spent way more than i think I should have at the shop to get diagnostics and the problem isn't fixed. Any help on this one?
Also... the engine kind of chugs or feels like I'm losing a little acceleration on and off when i'm driving even on cruise control before it dies on me. No fluctations in electricity power though... all my lights and everything are fine. Please help ASAP

I'm not sure. I brought my car in for some service a few months ago where they said they upgraded software but not sure what. They also changed my bad struts and a few other things like an o-ring.. not EXACTLY sure what was all fixed. Would they have upgraded it at that time? Aside from that, would the problem be because of anything else?
