Default Emission System Service Required

Car: '01 S80, 2.9L, 113000 miles

Description:
Received the above message and the Check Engine light is illumated -alternates between flashing and staying on solid.
There is a strange, somewhat 'rotten' smell in engine compartment and at the tail pipe.
Engine runs rough almostas ifa cylinder wasn't firing.

Recent maintenance activity:
Changed spark plugs about 250 miles ago.

Coincidence or not: this failure occurred while i was test driving a set of snow chains. The chains induced some serious vibration to the car. The warning message appeared after driving a short distance with the chains.

Question: I'd like to know if you all think this is related to a coil going bad or maybe a MAF, and what arethe recommendations on how to get this fixed. A search of the forums returns a few other posts that seem similar to my situation.

Oxygen sensor would be my guess from the "rotten egg" comment.

And why is it people always assume the last thing they did had something to do with it? It's the fallacy of false causation. Just because the sun comes up every morning after the roosters crow does not prove roosters make the sun rise.

Also make sure it isn't misfiring. Flashing check engine light is usually misfiring. But it can also flash from the O2 sensor.

With the S80, what are some of the more common causes for misfire? Is the car particularly sensitive toa type of spark plugs??

Plugs and coils are very common failures. The coils more than the plugs though. The OEM T6 plugs are Bosch Platinums.

The non-turbo cars I would go with the OEM plugs.

A rotten egg smell..tells me it could be a CAT starting to Clog up..do you have difficulty in climbing hills..like you don't have enough power or get a stronger smell..?

I've been cautious in my driving since this started happening, can only notice the rough engine idle & smell, it does seems to not have as much power when pulling away from a stop.

If the engine was misfiring on a cylinder, i think it would explain the loss (reduction)of power / rough idle; the unburned fuel being dumped in the exhaust and the rich fuel/exhaust mixture passing through the CAT might explain the 'rotten' smell and the subsequent triggering of the emissions warning. Thoughts??

I'm getting the codes pulled this morning, will post them later.

Pulled the codes
P0103B:
3503 - misfiring
3513 - misfire cylinder #1

I'm having the cheap plugs pulled and replaced with the Bosch Fusion. We'll evaluate, and if need be then replace the #1 coil module. Fortunately no flags were set for bad O2 or MAF sensors.

Plugs turned out to be okay, the #1 coil was bad. Replaced mid grade plugs with Bosch Platinum Ir Fusions, new #1 coil module, labor = $280.00 Runs like a champ again. FWIW, the mid grade plugs worked butthe engine seemed a bit less peppy though. Here's a case where I think it pays to get the better performing plugs.I'll be watching fuel economy results next week when Imake a Christmas cross-countrydrive.

Make sure to have the codes pulled with a volvo scan tool. Most others will not show all of the codes.

Come to think of it, when I had that rotten egg smell (in a different car) I had to change the O2 sensor and poke a hole with a long screwdriver, er, I mean, and replace the ridiculously expensive catalytic converter too. []
