Default Failed Emisions test, but car doesn't pollute!

Just had my 01 T6 in for the biennial renewal here in California. Car passed with flying colors in terms of pollutants. However their computer was not able to communicate with the ECU; "failure to successfully complete all OBD self tests". The worker told me he expected the ECU needed to be reset. Car was just at the dealer for the throttle body recall and my software was updated. How would they be able to access the ECU, if the smog stationcouldn’t, also isn't it standard procedure to reset the ECU anyhow? Perhaps it’s on the smog stations end. Any ideas? Common problem?
Thanks in advance
