Fuel Door won't lock/unlock

Fuel Door won't lock/unlock
It seems that everytime I get one thing to work on my car, something else breaks. The problem this time is the fuel door. When I lock the car, either from the inside or using the remote, the fuel door will sometimes lock and sometimes it won't. Conversely, when it is locked and I unlock the doors, sometime the fuel door will stay locked (like when I trying to pump gas).
I've checked all the fuses (front and rear) and they seem fine and the rear doors which share a common fuse are working just fine. Is it possible that the locking mechanism is going bad. If so, how hard is it to replace this unit. I've tried disconnecting it from the fender but must be doing it wrong because it will not budge.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Fuel Door won't lock/unlock
I've had a similar problem with the fuel door also. What I've noted is that if I lock the doors without the fuel door being COMPLETELY shut, it won't lock. What I mean by "completely" is that the door can appear to be closed but it in reality there is still alittle bit to remain on shutting the fuel door completely.

RE: Fuel Door won't lock/unlock
I had a similar problem w recently bought 2003 S80.Several points: 1) Access your locking selonoid through the trunk interior panel ... loosen a few hex bolts and slide out for maintenance; 2) I fixed my lock by simply using light teflon-based oil (like for bike chains). I exercised it a few times and it works beautifully; 3) Not sure on your model, but gas door on the '03 unlocks when you push the associated release button under the headlight control switch. It is not designed to unlock w the key (again, check owners manual for your year). Hope this helps.

Fuel door wont unlock solution
I have a 2000 S 80. I opened the lining panel in the trunk just interior to the location of the fuel door. There is a small motor visible (?solenoid? I am not expert) that pushes a plunger back and forth to lock/unlock the fule door. I simply slid the plunger to the opposite location it was sitting and the door is unlocked. Of course, it wont lock either so it remains unlocked, but can be opened and closed. So, if you are willing not to have the fuel door locked, this may be a solution. It worked for me (so far!).
