HELP! Please - Hydraulic Shift Solenoid (New Transmission?)
I have a 2000 S80 T-6 that I bought in August, 1999. I have coddled this car - doing every service required and some. She has less than 90K miles (I think around 88 - and the first 75K was mostly highway miles). Yesterday, it seemed a little bit weird - was skipping gears, struggling to get up a hill. I started to drive it to my local dealership when the URGENT Service Transmission Soon light came on.
The dealer says I have an internal fault - the hydraulic shift solenoid is bad - and therefore have to replace the WHOLE transmission. They told me it would cost $4900.
I just had the transmission serviced and flushed in July.
ANY advice you can give me would be great help. I am (was?) a Volvo for Life owner. My first was a 1986 240 DL and I was gearing up to buy my third next year. I called Volvo and they said they don't know of any issues with our transmissions, but the forums here tell me otherwise.

RE: HELP! Please - Hydraulic Shift Solenoid (New Transmission?)
The 99-01 S80 GMtransmissions are known to have problems. They are garbage in my opinion. I had to have my transmission replaced at a cost of $3500 plus tax at a volvo dealer at 114k miles back in the summer of 07. $4900 is way to much. Is that including tax or no. I had mine replaced at the dealer in Columbus Ohio.

RE: HELP! Please - Hydraulic Shift Solenoid (New Transmission?)
I just e-mailed them asking for the Codes, and will post as soon as I have them.
The $4900 is parts, labor and tax.
The independent Volvo mechanic I spoke with also told me that the part cannot be fixed or replaced and I needed to get a new transmission.
My car is only worth $6500 and this is just traumatising - financially, and emotionally (I love my Volvo!)
Thanks for the replies. Will update as soon as I have the Codes, etc.

RE: HELP! Please - Hydraulic Shift Solenoid (New Transmission?)
Tomorrow is okay. I have arranged with the dealership to keep the car there until tomorrow afternoon. Thanks so much for all the help and suggestions.
Is there a site I can find recommended shops and/or mechanics?
Two Volvo dealerships (one in Southern California - very large and reputable - and one a little further North) told me that I had to get a new transmission. An independent Volvo mechanic in Southern California also told me the same. So not sure who can do this job for me!
Thanks - once again - for all the help and suggestions.

Sowhat's the difference between a remanufactured or a rebuilt or a used transmission. I am getting more and more confused every day. AndI amstuck in a rental car until I get this fixed.
I guess there isno such thing as a "new" transmission.

9480636 should be the part number you need. But to be 100% sure I would need the last 6 of your Vin#.
The transmission will have to be dropped down most of the way and the side cover will have to be removed to install it.
I had posted the instructions on here before but cannot find them.
