Default New to me S80

Hey everyone...I purchased a 2012 S80 T6 a week ago, mostly because the test drive was so enjoyable. I know very little about Volvo cars. It has 122,350 on the clock. Runs smooth and quiet and very comfortable. However the approach lights dont come on(didnt know it had this feature) and the check engine light is on . Dont want to panic but what do you guys think? Did I make a big mistake buying one 10 years old with 122k on it? Price seemed fair and is a one owner with good maintenance record. All 4 wheels have terrible curb rash. though. Opinions appreciated. Im new to the forum. Thx

Approach light work by pulling the turn signal lever back after turning off the car.

Check engine light - the first step would be to scan the car with a compatible scanner - preferably one that can talk to all the control units in the car.

Thankyou Hoonk..I thought the approach lights were activated by hitting the light icon on the fob? What I have read is you hit the button and the mirror "puddle" lights come on, the park lights and the cabin lights. I get nothing when I press the button. When I unlock the car the cabin lights come on but nothing else.. i will try the turn signal as you said. Thx for trying to help. Much appreciated.
Hey Hoonk..I re read the owners manual and it says approach light are only activated by the button. Nothing about the turn signal. Having some fun with the newbie?

Sorry I misunderstood - Yes the light bulb or yellow button on the remote should turn on lights.

The turn signal pull is to light up the headlamps after you exit the car. My apologies.

Have you tried your other remote?

And after checking my car, a 2015 with the same remote - my approach lights don't work as described in the manual with either of my 2 remotes. I do have remote start installed - do you? Press the lock button and hold the light bulb down for ~3 seconds - the flashers flash and the car starts.

Tried both remotes and replaced batteries in both as as the info on the instruments said to replace. Kind of strange both remotes needed new batteries at the same time.. Just to make sure I understand you, I pull the turn signal towards me BEFORE I exit and the lights should come on? Which lights? I grew up when gas was a quarter a gallon so this car is like the Space Shuttle to me.😄 And you never need to apologize for try ing to help me out.
