Rear fog light question

Rear fog light question
I am a new S80 owner and I have a question about the rear fog light. Is there only supposed to be 1 bulb on the driver's side? It looks like there is a bulb holder on the passenger side, but the bulb won't go in.
I'm just wondering if something is missing or if it is just a one sided thing....first car for me that has a rear fog light.
Thanks.

RE: Rear fog light question
Most autos built in Europe have one rear fog lamp. It is always located on the left (drivers) side of the auto. There is NEVER two bulbs showing to the rear............only one. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Saab, and the list goes on use this system. If two bulbs are lit, it would appear as brake lamps, hence, only the left rear as the vehicle is being operated.

hey tech, why did they do that? what could be the reasoning for only having one bulb light up?

RE: Rear fog light question
When you have two, you have the light from the one on the right side reflecting into the drivers view. If you have one on the left, pointing to the right, it will hit the fog at an angle creating no reflection towards the rear view mirror. It is also very bright, so keeping it on when people are behind you would be quite rude.

You might want to check if it is legal to have two of these lights.
In Canada you are not allowed to have two of them. There is a reason there is only one and it is so people dont get them confused with your brake lights.

It aids in visibility when backing up in dark places when leaving a parking area.

RE: Rear fog light question
Getting pulled over for fog lights??? Hum, seems that those stupid High Intensity lights in the front of the car would be more of a reason. Especially people that simply just change the bulb and not the entire head set.
It does seem to possibly be a law in certain jurisdictions of the USA (but it seems to be near impossible to get a reading on this one) that people are not allowed to use two rear fog lamps. Each state seems to have their own traffic laws and there are some strange laws out there - like the ability to make a left on red in certain states, although both streets must be one ways in most cases.
The rear fog lamp issue is a strange one, the police themselves probably can't give you an answer let alone the morons at the Department of Motor Vehicles. This to me is one of those stupid bureaucratic laws that makes no sense. In the European Community the law is the complete opposite. Every single car MUST have rear fog lamps. I tend to go with the Europeans on this one, preferring viability in hazardous situations over a crash...but just my 2 cents.
