Default s-80 transmission question

Hi, I have a 99 S80 with 77k miles that is doing the shudder, slipping in and out of gear thing, its fluid is a light tanish color but clear and clean and at the right level, I check the tsb's and their is a ****load of them about this tranny.
I called the dealer and asked if there was a recall on this car he said "no, but i should bring it in anyway" yeah right so you can tell me it needs a complete new tranny.
My question is what is this update and software thing they are talking about, should volvo pay for it or what? Is the tranny most likely shot?

Thanks for any help

great site BTW

All the TSB's aren't recalls they are only fixes for problems. Which means Customer pays for them.
If it has never had any updates then you might want to try them first.
But the 99 tranny's were known to go bad.
