S80 Stuck Key Fob
My 2008 S80 Key fob won't disengage from the key switch. The car turns on and off ok, but when I depress the key fob to remove it, it only comes out about a quarter inch and I can't pull it completely out.
The work around is to leave the fob in the switch and use the valet key to unlock the driver's door. However, that sets off the car alarm, which is turned off by hustling inside the car and depressing the key fob.
Is it possible to change the key switch and reset the "software" in my driveway or do I have to take it to the dealer?
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks,
John

Unfortunately normally that means you need a new "ignition switch". The slot you put the key in. And more unfortunately a new switch requires a software download using VIDA to make it work. That means you can simply replace the switch, but it won't work or start the car until someone with a VIDA subscription (most commonly the local dealer) "does a download" to make the new module work.
I have read of cases where posters have taken the switch out, taken it apart and removed the broken parts preventing correct operation but have never tried to repair one - have only replaced them.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was afraid of. It sounds like I might be able to remove any broken parts, but to completely repair this, I'll have to take it to a dealer or replace it myself and have the car towed to a dealer for the download. Towing isn't going to happen because I live two hours from the nearest dealer.
At least the switch mechanism didn't fail in a no-start mode. I am able to start and stop the car. My plan is to call the parts dept on Monday to see if they have the switch in stock, then schedule an appt, drive it the two hours, and wait for it to be fixed.
Thanks,
John
