Steering rack click/clunk when turning wheel?
Hi All,
I've got a strange issue with my steering rack. I've got a click or clunk that happens during parking maneuvers. When the steering wheel motion transitions from turning right to turning left, it makes a noise. This happens only one way, no noise the other way.
It's not related to rotation of the road wheels, this happens when the car is stopped and doesn't affect the driving, there is no slop in the steering and the car drives great.
I put the car on ramps and got under it with my wife turning the wheel back and forth, and I think I've got it isolated to the driver's end of the steering rack. I can put my hand on the boot and feel movement while the click is happening. No movement evident in the outer tie rod.
Got to be the inner tie rod, right? No. I replaced it yesterday and it was still good. No change in the sound.
While removing the inner tie rod, I could get a little movement in that side of the rack, but there is no leaking or other obvious problems with the rack.
Any ideas on this other than to replace the rack? (which I'm not willing to do if this is just a superficial noise...)
Is there anything on this rack that can be adjusted?

This sounds like my issue:

That activity mentions a TSB on the subject. Does anybody have more info on it or advice on adjusting away the noise?
"There is a TSB on this, the TSB looks like more of a problem when you are sitting and turn the wheel quickly in one direction, but i found that it applies to turning while moving as well. The steering rack yoke needs to be adjusted, if you can get the car to show the problem while up on the lift, you will see the steering rack 'pop' when you turn the wheel, it almost looks like a gear in the steering rack gear box is shot. This is a design flaw, and cannot be fully repaired. But the dealer can adjust so that the symptoms are very minimal. The adjustments are actually between the yoke, steering gear box, and believe it or not, strut mounts."

Tsb #6421 - nhtsa id #10020113
I'm pretty convinced this TSB describes my issue:
TSB #6421
NHTSA ID #10020113
SUMMARY:
STEERING NOISE, YOKE ADJUSTMENT. KNOCKING, THUMPING, OR CLICKING NOISE MAY BE HEARD FROM THE STEERING.
Does anybody have more information on it? I'm not having any luck getting details base don the nhtsa or tsb numbers.
Anybody know the procedure to adjust the steering yoke?
