Default Steering Rack replacement, What kind do I have

I have a 99 S80 T6, The rack leaks an insane amount from within the drivers dust cover. As fast as pouring the fluid onto the ground, full to empty within a minute.

I intend to replace the rack, but I don't know what kind I have to order. I heard there are three kinds, with variable assist, a 1 piece non-assist, and a 2 piece non-assist. Any Idea how to tell?

also I now know to only use sh202 fluid in 1999 cars, but if I get a new/rebuilt rack, what kind should I use? The 202, 10, or 7.1? Is ate ok at that point?

I can't wait to get this car back on the road, I love it,

As far as I know there is just 2 types. Assist and non. It should be if you have assist there is an electrical sensor on the rack just below where the column attaches to the rack.

I hope the rack gets taken out today or tomorrow, if there is no sensor to disconnect then the rack is a non-assist right?

Correct. You can also see the sensor from the top if it has one.

Call any Volvo dealer with your VIN handy. They can search the original part number installed on the vehicle and get you the correct part. Any more questions about looking this up,give me a PM. I can look it up Monday if you would like me to.

Thumbs up

Well mine had a variable speed assist.

I saw some posts saying after the rack replacemnet, i have to take to the car to the dealership, cause they need to reprogram the computer.

Is this just some kind of urban legend or do i have to to really do that?

I reaplaced the rack by myself about a week ago, and everything seems to me working great. No issues so far, only cost me $350 came with 3 years of warranty.(since i replaced it= no bill from the repair=no warrany?)

If you put an assist rack back in then no software needed. If you put a non assist on then with no software you might run into issues down the road.
