Default Timing belt replacement

I just bought a 01 S80 T6 with 134k for next to nothing. Great car, no rust, no accidents etc.

I took the car to the dealer for a look over and aside from some normal maintenance they said it needs a new timing belt. Apparently the last shop that replaced the timing belt botched the job and broke some nipple off the thermostat and then modified the cover to allow for a different clamp. The cover cut into the belt so I'm going to need it done regardless.

I'm not new to Volvo, parents own them, but I am new to servicing them out of my own pocket. Right now they want $1900 to change the timing belt, tensioner(s), serp belts, thermostat and timing belt cover with labor.

Am I being taken for a ride or is this legit pricing? It's a reputable dealership with lifetime guarantee on all parts and labor. I do have a technical background but, I just don't trust myself doing this job.

Please give me some helpful comments and not the "OMG WHAT A RIP OFF!" on liners. If it's legit, I'll pay it.

Thanks.

I would check around with different dealerships. That sounds kinda high to me. Maybe even check with some local volvo mechanics? Im pretty sure if experienced enough this shouldn't be too difficult of a job for them.

Its high but not ridiculously so. If you are looking for perspective, call the honda dealer and ask them what they charge to do timing belt replacement on a honda. Or whatever. I think a dealer would just about always charge at least $1000

As to the thermostat nipple, it's pretty hard not to break that. The dealer would just order a new one before they start. personally I think converting them to brass is a lot better. This is a long way of me saying "leave it alone" but of course it's not mine.

$1900? Call for second or third opinions at independent shops with Volvo experience.

Sounds high, but calling a Honda dealer isn't the way to find out. Parts and labor for a timing belt on an Accord isn't going to be the same as your car.

Labor is about 4.6 hours. Parts would be around $600. Ask them for a parts and labor breakdown
