Default transmission fluid

Hello all,
First off I just purchased this car.... its a 2000 s80 t6, when I bought it all the fluids were at the proper capacity now 3 weeks later the tranny fluid is low. so I went to napa and they told me it took dextron III. So I added a couple quarts to the correct level and now the transmission feels like it shudders and slips a little, and the check engine light blinks while it shudders ( The check eng light just came on last week and the code was for the valve reset solenoid, I purchased it but it has not arrived yet). Did I add the wrong fluid? or could it have to do with the solenoid?

First the mechanic was correct. Volvo uses a Dexron III fluid. You may need to add some Slip Lock to it. You may want to have your trannie flushed and start with new fluid instead of mixing. I know Amsoil makes a Synthetic Trannie fluid (ATF) that meets the spec and does not require slip lock. Depending on the Trannie AW 55 or AW 50 you could also use the Torque Drive Trans fluid (ATD). Let me know if I can help. Just so you know I am an Amsoil Dealer.

Your mechanic should be able to tell you off the VIN number which Trannie you have. Slip lock is just an additive to help make the trannie fluid a little stickier. . I suggest whether you go regular fluid or synthetic that you have all the fluid changed so you know at least that you ahve good fluid in the car.

Stacy, your car has a GM 4T65E-GT transmission (made by General Motors). It does use the Dexron III fluid (or the Dexron VI replacement for Dexron III). You can drop the pan on this transmission and replace the fluid filter. That might help. Here is writeup: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...p?f=11&t=20278

If interested, you can also reference my writeup for this car

https://volvoforums.com/forum/showth...t=transmission

It should cover mostly everything that I did...
I'd recommend dropping the pan and changing the filter, also, installing an in-line filter as is mentioned in my writeup
