Default Transmission Questions

I think the transmission my 00 S80 T6 is slipping but it has not thrown any codes to have checked. I have about 140,000 miles on the car and it does not want to shift into 3rd. It has now started to make a whining noise when you shift from gear to gear. The problems started after i had the fluid changed.
What I would like to know is would it be better to rebuild the trans or put a new one in? And does anyone know of a good transmission repair place in Ohio?

Thanks,
jenjengrace

i dont know much about transmission rebuilts, but if by "new" you mean "used from junk yard" then i would say rebuilt is better, when you replace mechanical parts with new ones its 100% that you are getting new parts that will not break, with a junk yard you never know what you are getting, if its been abused it will break soon again and you dont want that,,,,call around, get a yellow pages and find transmission shops in your area, google them , it should not be hard to find, call them all...

had mine done at Aamco Transmissions, they should have a shop in Ohio. I think rebuilt is a better option too.

I finally had the "transmission service required" code tiggered so i took my car to Danco in Fairfield, Ohio. $3000 later my car shifts like a dream.

Default transmission service urgent and slipping

Everyone,

My 2003 S80 with 148,000 miles started slipping to the point where it would not move at all in gear. I assumed the tranny was toast since all posts I reviewed pretty much said a new tranny was needed. My car sat for 2 months until it was time to move to another house. I started it up and drove it 5 miles with no issues! Light was still on. Took it to a mechanic that was determined to figure out what was going on since grannys do not slip and get better. He changed the filter, had someone come to his shop and reprogram the computer AND, it runs just fine with no slipping!!!! He drove it home a couple of times with no slipping and He charged me 180 bucks and I now have it. Will see how it acts the next couple of 100+ mile days. He said that the code was showing fourth gear issues, but it just needed to be reprogrammed and if it's not slipping, it can't be the tranny (mechanically speaking). Great news, dont go to dealer or aamco, they all say you need a new tranny. Hope this helps everyone out.
