Exclamation Whining Noise

I have a 2008 S80 T6 with approx 42,000 miles that has developed an engine whining noise. The noise does not happen when the engine is cold. Once warm, it is most noticeable at 20-25 MPH especially if coasting or decelerating. At times the noise is louder than at other times. In addition, sometimes it sounds like something is rubbing against the fan blade. It does not make the noise if i rev the engine. It is not the typical turbo noise and did not make the noise for the first approx 35,000 miles. Any one else experice this? Thanks

This noise comes from the engine for sure. Everyone who is riding in the car says "why is your transmission making that noise"

I also own a 2008 T6 whic I am noticing a louder "whine" from under the hood. I was planning on checking the serp belt and spraying some belt dreesing on it to see if that is the spot. I hope that its not the turbo's getting louder.

Maybe the timing belt rubbing against the protective cover. These covers are not as stable/firm.

Maybe yes or maybe no. Next time you hear the noise put the shifter in neutral and coast. See if it still makes it. Could be a wheel bearing or hub.

Otherwise its most likely the surpentine belt and pulley. Again, the noise should change by turning the AC on and off if thats the case.

My 1999 T6 is doing it when shifting gears. It seems loudest just before throwing in the second gear. It's annoying and I am scared to drive the car; the garage is 370km from my location! Anybody with an idea - I would appreciate. Am able to fix a few things on this car, but this one is boggling my mind!

I'm having a valve noise issue. My wife first impression was a fan noise. But I realized that the noise was consistence with the engine RPM.

You might want to park the car (outside and not in garage), close all windows, then press on the gas pedal slowly and at different variations to see if it's the valve noise.

Default Whining Noise

Thanks for the input from everyone. It appears that the whining noise is from a A/C compressor that is going bad. The noise occurs in the 20-25 MPH range and it goes away if the a/c button is turned off. If you turn on the a/c, the noise returns. The car is in the shop right now getting a new compressor (thank goodness for a warranty). In talking with the tech. he said this is actually a common issue with S-80's (the a/c compressor going bad). As it is going bad, the noise will get louder and louder.

Default Transmission Whining

Greetings

I have an '07 S-80 V-8 AWD with 160K miles.

I have a new whining noise that's very noticeable in the cabin area.

It's a medium pitched whine that decreases in pitch as the transmission advances, but increases in pitch as RPMs increase.

Transmission has also been jerky at times, but apparently that's a software issue (?)

Always during acceleration. Quiet otherwise.

Reason for concern?

Your input is very much appreciated!

It took 2 years and two different dealers to find the problem. They now have a service bulletin to troubleshoot the issue, of courseit helps that the whirring noise became more consistent. Unfortunately my 2015 xc60 is now out of warranty, but for about $200 they'll cut the seals off and the noise is gone!
