I want to replace the fuel filter on my 2000 V40 with new. When I was investigating, I noticed a band that encircles the filter canister. The bands function seems to be to scure a sensor. I'm curious what the function of this sensor is. (Yes, my band/clamp is broken) Does anyone know what that sensor is? Pic attached.
Vehicle presently has original fuel filter. 84k miles. I'm experiencing some hard starting - I have to crank it for 3-5 seconds before it starts. It used to start immediately. I'm thinking the fuel filter may be the cause. New plugs and air cleaner. I suspect the injectors are ok as well. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Brad
Don't know what that wire might go to but there is no "fuel filter sensor". Your fuel filter should certainly be changed every every x miles for basic maintenance but that's not causing your long crank time. What's the fuel pressure? Early 4cyl S40s have problems with fuel pressure regulators. Check for fuel in the vacuum hose on the regulator. Engine temp sensors are another possibility for a long crank. But I would diagnose those before replacement using a fuel pressure gauge and a quality scan tool.
Hello again Hoonk! Thanks for your speedy response. I don't have a scan tool or fuel pressure gauge, but I did pull the vacuum hose on the fuel pressure regulator. (Pic attached) It's dry as a bone - no gas. Does that suggest my fuel pressue regulator is operating as designed? My gas milage isn't too hot either - 17mpg around town, but there are a lot of big hills here.
Hey Hoonk! One more thing. I always wanted a quality scan tool. Can you recommend one that will work on my 2000 V40, but won't break the bank? Will a quality scan tool tell me what temperature sensors are not working properly? I bet they're valuable for diagnosing car issues, huh?
The stolen/hacked version of VIDA 2014d is easily found free on the internet. You will need a DICE unit to interface with the car and a CPU to run it on. The aftermarket DICE clones sell for less than $200. There are plenty of other scan tools for less than can offer most/some of VIDAs functionality.
Hmmm..... Thanks Hoonk. I have a good auto shop I take the old girl to. On my next service I think I'll ask them to plug it in to their scan tool. There is a mechanic there that specializes in Volvos - been working on them since the '80's. Thanks for all your advice Hoonk! I'm grateful for your help.
