oil in timing box
I'm considering the purchase of a 2001 v40. Mileage is high but understandable since the current owner has to drive long miles for work.
Yesterday I had the car evaluated by our regular mechanic. A number of items came up, but the one that I understand the least about was this:
There is a fair bit of oil in the timing box. The box itself is warped and does close easily. Two oil cooler hoses have also been soaked in oil and are now swollen. The owner says that several months ago he replaced a few problematic hoses that had spewed oil all over the engine. Our mechanic told us the the timing box, belt, and all of the swollen hoses should be replaced immediately (lots of labor)
So, the questions:
1. Do you agree with our mechanic that this problem will require the immediate replacement of timing box, belt, and all swollen hoses?
2. Would these problems suggest the existence of other, deeper problems that should make us wary of the car?
Thanks in advance!
