Default V40 tailgate lock stuck

The button on the tailgate of my X-reg V40 estate (2000 model) is stuck. Can anyone give me any advice on dismantling it?

The problem is not with the central locking mechanism - that works fine. I have also taken off the interior panel inside of the tailgate, and the latch mechanism appears to be working ok - i.e. I can release the latch by pulling on the rod connecting the latch to the button on the outside of the tailgate. The problem seems to be that the button on the tailgate will not depress far enough to fully engage the latch mechanism - the button only goes in at most half way.

I think the problem is that something is jammed inside the button - possibly a bit of the rubber O-ring. (A few years ago this disintegrated and I removed most of it). How do I get at this to take apart? From the inside of the tailgate I can see two bolts (approx. 10mm) that look like they might do the job - are these all that hold the lock mechanism in place?

I don't have a garage or yard where I can lock the car up, so I am reluctant to start dismantling the lock if I don't have a clear idea of what I am doing!

Thanks for your help...

I had this concern a while ago. I end up using silicone and trying to get it to loose. Took a while but, Yes, the seal is stuck in there causing the issue. Try not to break the key. Good luck.
